MHz Networks Launches Al Jazeera English on MHz Networks 5

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Starting today, independent, non-commercial broadcaster MHz Networks is expanding its current Al Jazeera English (AJE) offering to provide round-the-clock coverage on MHz Networks 5.

AJE, an award-winning global news and current affairs channel broadcast in more than 100 countries, will join a line-up of nine other prestigious international channels that MHz broadcasts and cablecasts in the region.

Since April 29, an evening newscast anchored from AJE’s Washington news bureau has aired nightly at 10 p.m. on MHz Networks’ primary local channel, MHz Networks 1/MHz Worldview DC. The half-hour AJE broadcast will continue to air daily on MHz Networks 1/MHz Worldview DC, in addition to many other individual newscasts culled from a variety of countries, including: India (ANI), Israel (IBA), Germany (Deutsche Welle) and Taiwan (Mac TV), among others.

“It is essential to the mission of MHz Networks to bring news coverage from across the globe to make as many perspectives as possible available to U.S. audiences,” said Frederick Thomas, chief executive of MHz Networks. “AJE complements our mission perfectly and was a missing piece in our line-up. Viewers have already responded extremely favorably to the upcoming addition of the full-time AJE channel, as well as to our other nine 24/7 international channels.”

Al Jazeera English launched internationally in November 2006 as the world’s first English-language news channel headquartered in the Middle East. The network has broadcast centers in Kuala Lumpur, Doha, London and Washington, D.C., and nearly 70 bureaus around the world.

“We are extremely pleased to be launching on MHz and joining their impressive line-up of channels,” said Phil Lawrie, Director of Global Distribution for Al Jazeera. “For over two years, Al Jazeera English has been setting new standards in international reporting by providing a platform for the under-represented corners of the world. We know there is a great demand in the United States for AJE’s groundbreaking news and current affairs programming, and we applaud MHz for being among the first US providers to air the channel.”

MHz Networks broadcasts 10 distinct international television networks in the D.C. area, including: NHK World TV (Japan), France 24, RT (formerly Russia Today), South African Broadcast Corporation News International (SABC), euronews, Vietnam Television (VTV 4), Metro Chinese Network (MCN) and Nigerian Television Authority (NTA). The channels are also carried by the region’s cable and telco systems.

The 24/7 AJE channel will be available in the D.C. market via MHz Networks 5 on broadcast (over the air) channel 30.5. Via cable, viewers may tune into Comcast channel 275, Cox channel 474, RCN channel 34 and Verizon FiOS channel 457. AJE replaces BVN programming on MHz Networks 5.
