17th Annual Caribbean American Heritage Awards Air on MHz

FALLS CHURCH, VA – The 17th Annual Caribbean American Heritage Awards air Saturday, April 2 at 6 AM ET on MHz Networks 1 in the DC metro area.

The 2010 CARAH Gala, held under the patronage of the Caribbean Diplomatic corps, honors and celebrates individuals of Caribbean heritage or friends of the Caribbean who have been standard bearers of excellence, and who have made positive contributions to the American and international landscape.

The hour-long special was produced by CaribNation producer Larry Sindass. CaribNation airs on MHz Networks 1 in the Independent Producers block, 1:30 PM each Saturday.

This year's Caribbean American Heritage Awards Gala honors Joseph Baptiste, DDSK, David Boyer, Edward Cheung, Ph.D., Wayne Frederick, MDDr., Roy Hastick, Hon. Marie St. Fleurand, Joy Young Stephenson and reggae icon, Rita Marley.

The Caribbean American Heritage (CARAH) Awards were instituted in 1994 by the Institute of Caribbean Studies in order to demonstrate the contributions that Caribbean immigrants make to the USA.  

Also honored from time to time are Friends of the Caribbean whose work contributes to the well-being and welfare of the Caribbean peoples. 

Since its founding, the CARAH Awards, which have become the signal honors and recognition program for Caribbean Americans,  have been awarded to over fifty distinguished individuals including for example:  Earl Graves Snr., Publisher of Black Enterprise, of Barbadian heritage;  Cicely Tyson, who is of Nevisian heritage;  Ambassador the Hon. Andrew Young; Congresswoman Barbara Lee; Dumas Simeus, Haitian American entrepreneur and philantropist; Jimmy Cliff, Reggae Legend; and Hon. Eric Holder, Attorney General of the US, who is Barbadian heritage. 

The Institute of Caribbean Studies (ICS), founded in 1993, is a non-partisan, non-proft, 501 (c) (3) organization dedicated to policy analysis, advocacy and education on issues that advance the interests of Caribbean Americans.
